My designs, or frames, in my paintings are components of a chance-based system that involves rolling a die. The die determines what design will reside in a particular frame, the orientation of the design in that frame, and the colors that the design will exhibit. My colors consist of hues, tints, and shades; all selected by chance from a predetermined pool.

I am interested in how the finished product personifies the relation of the component to the whole. Through thousands of different color amalgamations and ultimately an infinite amount of composition orientations each work becomes an entity.

The relationship between control and chance has always been a fascinating matter for me. I set the parameters for my systems but the entire composition is left to the chance of the die. In this sense, my paintings are what they’re supposed to be.
